Chandeliers and ceiling lights
- Width: add the room length and width in metres, then multiply by about 8.3 to get a good chandelier width in centimetres. A 5 x 4 m majlis suits a chandelier of about 70 to 80 cm.
- Height of the fitting: about 21 to 25 cm for every metre of ceiling height. A 3 m ceiling suits a chandelier about 60 to 75 cm tall.
- Clearance: keep the lowest point at least 210 cm above the floor wherever people walk.
- Low ceilings: under about 2.6 m, a flush or semi flush ceiling light keeps the room open.
- Long rooms: two or three smaller pendants spaced along the room often look better than one large fitting.
Over the dining table or kitchen island
- Hanging height: about 75 to 90 cm between the table top and the bottom of the pendant.
- Width: about one half to two thirds of the table width, and at least 30 cm narrower than the table so nobody bumps it.
- Several pendants: space them about 60 to 75 cm apart, and keep them about 15 cm in from the ends of the table or island.
Wall lights
- Height: about 150 to 170 cm from the floor to the centre of the light.
- Beside the bed: about 15 to 25 cm out from the edge of the headboard, at a height that suits reading.
- Hallways: about 2.5 to 3 m apart for an even line of light.
Table and floor lamps
- Bedside lamps: the bottom of the shade at about eye level when sitting up in bed, usually 50 to 70 cm above the bedside table.
- Floor lamps: beside or just behind the sofa or chair, so the light falls over the shoulder.
Step and stair lights
- Height: about 20 to 30 cm above each step or above the floor.
- Spacing: one light every one to three steps, depending on how bright the stair should be.
