Two bulbs can be equally bright and still make a room feel completely different. The difference is light color, also called color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K). The lower the number, the warmer and more golden the light. The higher the number, the cooler and bluer it looks.
The three main light colors
- Warm white (about 2700K to 3000K): soft and golden, close to the glow of a traditional bulb or candle. Relaxing and welcoming.
- Neutral white (about 4000K): clear and balanced. Good for seeing detail without feeling cold.
- Cool white (5000K and above): bright with a blue tone, similar to daylight. Energizing, but can feel harsh in living spaces.

Room by room
- Majlis and living room: warm white, 2700K to 3000K. See how to light a majlis.
- Bedroom: warm white, around 2700K, for a calm atmosphere in the evening.
- Dining room: warm white, 2700K to 3000K. Food and faces look more natural in warm light.
- Kitchen: 3000K to 4000K, so work surfaces are well lit.
- Bathroom and dressing area: 3000K to 4000K for clear, true colors at the mirror.
- Study or office corner: neutral white, around 4000K, to stay focused.
- Courtyard and garden: warm white for evenings outside, cooler and brighter only where security light is needed.
Brightness is a separate choice
Light color says nothing about how bright a bulb is. Brightness is measured in lumens. As a rough guide, an LED bulb of about 800 lumens gives light similar to an old 60 watt bulb. A room can use bright warm light or soft cool light, so it helps to check both numbers on the bulb box.
Keep one color per room
Mixing warm and cool bulbs in the same room is one of the most common lighting mistakes. It makes some corners look yellow and others blue. Picking one color temperature for each room keeps the space calm and consistent.
