The majlis is where guests are welcomed, coffee is poured and evenings stretch late. A single bright light in the middle of the ceiling makes it feel flat and harsh. The secret to a warm, generous majlis is layering: a few light sources at different heights, each with its own job.
1. Start with soft overall light
A pendant or ceiling light gives the room its base glow. In a majlis, a woven, rattan or fabric shade works well because it spreads the light gently instead of pointing it straight down. For a long majlis, two or three smaller pendants spaced along the room often look better than one large fixture.
2. Add wall lights for depth
Wall lights wash the walls with light, which makes the room feel larger and highlights arches, niches, calligraphy or framed art. Place them at roughly eye level when standing, about 160 to 180 cm from the floor, and space them evenly along the main wall.
3. Light the seating corners
Majlis seating runs along the walls, so the corners are often the darkest spots. A floor lamp in a corner or a pair of table lamps on side tables gives light where people actually sit and talk, and adds a cozy pool of light at the edges of the room.
4. Finish with candlelight
Flameless candles on the coffee table, a tray or a window ledge add the flicker of a real candle without smoke or open flame. They are the final layer that makes the room feel welcoming at night.
Choose warm white light
For a majlis, warm white bulbs around 2700K to 3000K give the golden tone that suits wood, fabric and gold details. Cool white light (5000K and above) tends to make a sitting room feel like an office. More on this in our guide to warm white vs cool white.
Quick checklist
- One soft main light, or several small pendants for a long room
- Wall lights on the main wall, at eye level
- A lamp in every dark corner where people sit
- Flameless candles on tables and ledges
- Warm white bulbs, 2700K to 3000K, throughout
- Dimmers where possible, so the mood can change from daytime visits to late evenings
